Anthony Smith is a music director, conductor, and electronic music designer whose work spans regional theatre, university stages, and national tours. With over a decade of experience leading productions at institutions such as Virginia Repertory Theatre, Red Mountain Theatre, and Virginia Commonwealth University, Smith brings both artistic rigor and technical versatility to every project he joins.
His credits include music direction and electronic music design for productions of Fun Home, The Wiz, Sister Act, West Side Story, Frozen, The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, and Cinderella, among many others. He has served as Music Director for Love Somebody Now, a musical revue of the work of composer Andrew Lippa, and is currently working with Concord Theatricals on the publication of his two-piano arrangement of The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, slated for release in Summer 2026. His musicianship encompasses conducting from both piano and baton, alongside skills as a pianist, orchestrator, arranger, vocalist, and vocal coach.
Off the podium, Smith has held senior leadership roles overseeing music, audio/visual, and lighting departments — managing budgets, contracting musicians, and directing staff across multiple production lanes. He is proficient in a wide range of music technology platforms, including Logic Pro X, MainStage, Sibelius, QLab, and Adobe Audition, and holds a Level 3 Dante Certification. Smith is committed to the full spectrum of theatrical music-making, from the first rehearsal piano to the final mix.
